Understanding the International ISO Paper Standards (A4 to 2A0)

The international paper size system most of the world uses today is defined by International Organization for Standardization under standard ISO 216. Commonly known as the A-series, these sizes are designed with a unique mathematical property that makes scaling simple, predictable, and highly practical.

If you’ve ever printed on A4, scaled a drawing to A3, or seen a large-format poster labelled A0, you’re already interacting with this elegant system.

The Core Principle: The √2 Aspect Ratio

All A-series paper sizes share the same aspect ratio:

1 : √2 (approximately 1 : 1.4142)

This ratio ensures that:

  • When you cut a sheet in half parallel to its shorter side,
  • The resulting halves maintain exactly the same proportions.

This is why:

  • A4 folded in half becomes A5
  • A3 reduced by 50% becomes A4
  • A1 doubled becomes A0

No distortion. No layout changes. Just perfect scaling.

The Reference Size: A0

The system starts with A0, defined as:

  • Area = exactly 1 square meter
  • Aspect ratio = 1 : √2

Every subsequent size halves the area of the previous one.

ISO A-Series Paper Dimensions (A4 to 2A0)

Below is a visual matrix showing dimensions in millimetres:

Size Dimensions (mm) Area Relative to A0 Typical Uses
A4 210 × 297 1/16 Letters, documents, reports
A3 297 × 420 1/8 Posters, drawings, spreadsheets
A2 420 × 594 1/4 Medium posters, technical drawings
A1 594 × 841 1/2 Flip charts, architectural plans
A0 841 × 1189 1 Large posters, display boards
2A0 1189 × 1682 2 Large-format printing, signage

Why This System Is So Widely Used

The ISO A-series offers several advantages:

  • ✔ Perfect scaling without distortion
  • ✔ Efficient storage and envelope matching
  • ✔ Logical progression of sizes
  • ✔ Ideal for printing, publishing, drafting, and design

It is used across Europe, Asia, Africa, and most of the world.
The main exception is the United States and Canada, which use the ANSI paper size system (Letter, Legal, Tabloid).

Quick Reference Dimensions (mm & inches)

Size mm Inches (approx.)
A4 210 × 297 8.27 × 11.69
A3 297 × 420 11.7 × 16.5
A2 420 × 594 16.5 × 23.4
A1 594 × 841 23.4 × 33.1
A0 841 × 1189 33.1 × 46.8
2A0 1189 × 1682 46.8 × 66.2

Final Thoughts

The ISO A-series paper standard is a brilliant example of mathematical design applied to everyday life. From A4 documents to 2A0 billboards, every size maintains harmony, scalability, and efficiency — all thanks to a simple √2 ratio.

Once you understand the logic behind it, you’ll never look at a sheet of paper the same way again.
